Here is why a cool, rainy stretch does more to your siding, roof, and concrete than a heat wave does.
Why is rainy, mild weather worse for my home than extreme heat?
Algae, mold, and mildew need two things to grow: moisture and moderate temperatures. Extreme heat actually works against them to a degree, because surfaces dry out fast and direct sun is hostile to growth on exposed elevations.
A stretch of mid 70s with rain most days is the opposite. Surfaces never fully dry out, humidity stays high, and temperatures sit right in the comfortable range where biological growth spreads fastest. Several consecutive damp days can do more visible damage to your exterior than two weeks of 95 degree sun.
What actually happens to my siding during a wet stretch?
The shaded elevations take the worst of it. North and east facing walls that already stay damp longer will not get a chance to dry at all across several rainy days. Any algae already present spreads, and new growth takes hold in spots that were previously clean.
You will typically notice it most in these places:
- The lower few feet of siding, where rain splashback carries soil and organic debris up from the ground
- Around and below gutters, where overflow and runoff keep the surface consistently wet
- Behind shrubs and landscaping planted close to the house, where airflow is limited
- Under eaves and covered areas that stay humid without getting direct sun to dry them
Why does my roof look worse after a rainy stretch?
Roof algae thrives in exactly these conditions. Gloeocapsa Magma, the organism responsible for the black streaks on asphalt shingles, spreads fastest when the roof surface stays damp and temperatures are mild. Several consecutive rainy days give it ideal growing conditions, and the streaks are often noticeably darker and wider after a wet week.
The moisture also sits against the shingle surface longer, which is what accelerates the breakdown of the granule layer that protects your roof from UV damage.
What about my driveway and walkways?
Concrete in shaded areas is where you will see it fastest. Algae builds up on the sections of driveway and walkway that stay damp, particularly near mulch beds, under tree coverage, and anywhere water pools instead of draining. After several wet days, those areas can develop a green tint and become genuinely slippery.
Steps and porches are worth paying attention to here. A slippery front step after a rainy week is a real safety issue, especially at night or for anyone less steady on their feet.
Should I wait until it dries out to clean?
For scheduling the actual work, yes, cleaning is best done during a dry window so the treatment can work properly and surfaces dry evenly. But do not wait to get on the calendar. The growth happening during this wet stretch does not reverse when the sun comes back. It stays, and it keeps spreading through the rest of the summer.
The practical approach is to book now for the next dry window rather than waiting until you can see how bad it got. Schedules fill up, and the damp stretch will have added growth by the time it clears.
Will the rain wash any of it off?
No. This is the part that catches people out. Rain does not clean algae or mildew off your home, it feeds them. The growth is a living organism bonded to the surface, and water alone does nothing to break that bond. If anything, a rainy week leaves your exterior worse than it started, with more growth and fresh splashback along the lower siding.
