The leaves are coming down across the Triangle now, and while a yard full of them is part of what makes fall beautiful, a gutter full of them is a different story. As the trees drop their leaves through October and November, your gutters become a catch basin for all of it, and what collects up there causes real problems if it is not cleared. Here is what actually happens inside your gutters during leaf season and why it matters.
Why are fall leaves such a problem for gutters?
Gutters are designed to channel water off your roof and away from your home, and they do that well when they are clear. Falling leaves undermine that completely. Leaves collect in the gutter troughs and, more importantly, pile up at the downspout openings where the water is supposed to drain out. Once the downspouts are blocked, the water has nowhere to go.
Unlike light summer debris, fall leaves come down in volume, quickly, and they mat together when wet into a dense, soggy mass that water cannot pass through. A gutter that was clear in September can be fully clogged a few weeks into leaf season.
What goes wrong when gutters clog in the fall?
A clogged gutter in the wet fall and winter months sets off a chain of problems:
- Water overflows the gutter and pours down against the foundation, which over time can lead to moisture problems in the basement or crawlspace
- The constant overflow runs down the fascia and soffit boards, which rot when they stay wet
- Concentrated overflow erodes landscaping, mulch beds, and the soil around the house
- The weight of wet, matted leaves can pull gutters loose or cause them to sag and separate from the house
- In a cold snap, water trapped in clogged gutters freezes, adding heavy weight and stress that can damage gutters and the roof edge
None of this is dramatic on any single rainy day, but a full fall and winter of clogged, overflowing gutters adds up to expensive, avoidable damage.
Why not just wait until all the leaves are down and do it once?
Because the gutters spend the entire leaf season clogged and overflowing while you wait. In the Triangle, leaf drop stretches over many weeks, and there is plenty of rain during that period. If the gutters fill early and you wait until December to clear them, they have been overflowing through every storm in between.
The better approach for most homes is to clear the gutters once as the leaves really start coming down, and again after the trees have mostly finished dropping. That keeps water flowing through the whole season rather than letting it back up during the weeks you are waiting.
How do I know if my gutters are already clogging?
A few signs are visible from the ground without getting on a ladder:
- Water spilling over the edge of the gutter during rain instead of draining through the downspouts
- Leaves and debris visibly piled up and poking out of the gutter line
- Water streaming down the side of the house or pooling at the foundation after a storm
- Sagging gutter sections where the weight of wet leaves is pulling them down
- Staining or water lines on the siding below the gutter from repeated overflow
With rain coming this weekend, those storms are a good chance to watch how your gutters are handling the water. If it is spilling over the sides, they are already backing up.
Is this something I should do myself?
Clearing gutters means getting on a ladder, often on a two story home, and working along the roofline, repeatedly repositioning the ladder as you go. That is exactly where many homeowner injuries happen, and wet fall conditions make it more hazardous. The matted, soggy leaves are also heavier and messier to deal with than people expect.
If there is any question about safe access, it is not worth the risk. Professional clearing handles the whole run safely, confirms the downspouts actually drain, and checks for sagging or damage while up there.
What does the job involve?
For most homes, the process includes removing all the leaves and debris from the gutter troughs, clearing and flushing the downspouts so they drain freely, confirming water flows properly toward the discharge points, and noting any sagging sections or damage that need attention. The goal is gutters that actually move water away from your home through the heart of leaf season and the wet months that follow.
