The First Warm Weekend Is When Green Growth Shows Up

Soft washing Raleigh NC becomes a “right now” problem the minute we get a warm weekend. Folks in Raleigh, Cary, and Apex step outside, the sun hits the shady side of the house, and suddenly that “little tint” looks like a full-on green film.

This is the Triangle’s spring pattern. Warm days + cool nights + humidity = siding, fences, and decks staying damp longer than you think—especially on north-facing walls and tight side yards.

What you’re seeing (and why it spreads fast)

That green on siding and fences is usually algae/mildew. It loves:

  • Shade (north sides, behind fences, tree cover)

  • Moisture that lingers (mulch beds, sprinkler overspray, downspout areas)

  • Textured surfaces (vinyl, painted wood, stained fences)

In Raleigh neighborhoods with mature trees (think Five Points / older parts of town) and in Cary/Apex subdivisions where fences and side yards don’t get much airflow, it shows up early and keeps coming back if it’s just “rinsed.”

Why pressure can make it worse

A lot of homeowners try to blast it off. The problem is you can:

  • force water behind vinyl laps

  • scar wood grain on fences/decks

  • leave “clean stripes” where the wand passed but growth is still embedded

Green growth isn’t just sitting on top. It’s bonded to the surface. That’s why soft washing works better than high pressure for siding and most fencing.

What actually works: soft wash + controlled rinse

For siding, the goal is to kill and lift the growth, then rinse it clean without driving water where it doesn’t belong.

For fences and decks, it depends on the material:

  • Wood fence/deck: gentler approach so you don’t fuzz the fibers

  • Composite: usually cleans up well with the right solution + rinse

  • Painted surfaces: careful chemistry and even rinse to avoid patchy results

This is the kind of job we see all over Wake County once spring kicks in—one side of the home looks fine, the shaded side looks tired.
