Labor Day has come and gone, the kids are back in school, and the routines have shifted from summer mode into the rhythm of fall. This is the point in the year when a lot of homeowners finally get to the projects that kept getting pushed through a busy summer, and the outside of the house is usually near the top of that list. Now that things have settled, it is a good moment to take stock of what your home needs before fall fully sets in.
Here is what is worth handling and why now is the right time.
Why do so many people tackle the exterior right after Labor Day?
Summer is chaotic. Travel, camps, kids home full time, weekends packed with activities. The house projects that require a bit of coordination, like scheduling exterior cleaning, tend to get pushed to the side. Once Labor Day passes and the fall routine settles in, people finally have the bandwidth to deal with them.
There is also a natural mental reset. The start of the school year and the end of summer make September feel like a fresh start, much the way January does. Getting the house in order is a satisfying way to step into the new season, and the exterior is an easy, high impact thing to check off.
What has the summer left on my house?
By this point in the year, a Raleigh home has been through a full season of heat, humidity, pollen, and storms.
The typical result is:
- Algae and mildew on the siding, worst on the shaded elevations that stay damp
- Black streaks on the roof, at their peak after summer
- Red clay staining, oil, and algae on the driveway and walkways
- A green or slippery film on the deck and patio
- Rust or hard water staining near sprinklers from a summer of irrigation
- A full summer of pollen and debris packed into the gutters
All of it is at or near its most established point of the year right now, which makes early fall the moment a cleaning makes the biggest visible difference.
Is the weather still good for cleaning in September?
Yes, and this stretch is a good example. After Labor Day, Raleigh has settled into mild mid 80s days with cool mornings and mostly dry conditions before rain returns this weekend. Those are comfortable, workable conditions for exterior cleaning, and there are still good dry windows to get the work done and dried properly.
As fall progresses, the clear windows get shorter and less frequent, and the leaves start adding to the mess. Early September, right now, is one of the easier and more effective times of the year to reset the exterior.
Why not just wait until later in the fall?
Two reasons. First, the summer buildup on your house keeps setting in the longer it sits, so waiting means more established growth to remove. Second, once the leaves start dropping in the coming weeks, you add a whole new layer of debris and staining on top of what is already there.
Cleaning now, before the leaves come down, means that when fall debris arrives you are only managing the new material, not months of summer growth underneath it. It is the difference between getting ahead of the season and playing catch up through it.
What should be on the fall to do list for the exterior?
For most Raleigh homes stepping into fall, the priorities are:
- Soft wash the house to clear the summer’s algae and mildew
- Soft wash the roof if black streaks are visible
- Clean the driveway, walkways, and steps to remove summer staining and algae
- Clean the deck or fence, which is also the right season to stain if that is on your list
- Plan gutter clearing before the leaves start dropping in earnest
Handling the house, roof, and concrete now, and lining up the deck and gutter work, gets the whole property ready for the season.
What is the most efficient way to handle it?
Bundling the main items into one visit is the most efficient and cost effective way to reset the property at once, rather than scheduling piece by piece through a busy fall. If a deck or fence is on your list to stain, timing the cleaning now sets it up for the ideal staining window in the coming weeks.
